Helping Hungry Children During the Holidays

Writer: Pam SteelPam Steel

Throughout October, November, and December we have been serving 350 students a weekend food sack every week. The teachers, counselors, and administrators at Kentwood Early Childhood Center, Goliad Elementary, Moss Elementary, Marcy Elementary, and Big Spring Intermediate campuses have been identifying students that need a weekend food sack to bridge the gap between the school provided lunch they receive on Friday and the school provided breakfast they receive when they return to school on Monday morning. By giving these students a food sack at the end of each week it ensures that these students will go home with a sack filled with child-friendly food to get them through the weekend.

For holiday breaks, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas break each student being served by Food 2 Kids Big Spring will be going home with at least two food sacks before school is released for the break. We are grateful to all the staff at Big Spring ISD that see that the food sacks get distributed to children in need in our community. Due to generous donations from our community and the Dora Roberts Foundation, F. Marie Hall Foundation, Big Spring Area Community Foundation, and many individuals, churches, and businesses we can purchase the over 10,000 food sacks we will need to serve the students this school year.

Food 2 Kids Big Spring is grateful for the support we receive each year to keep our mission going to feed hungry children in our community. Our nonprofit is run completely by volunteers, we have no paid executive director or staff. Every dollar donated to Food 2 Kids Big Spring is used to help Big Spring children. The food sacks go directly in the child's backpack so the child has direct access to the food. These are only a few examples of the unique qualities of our nonprofit.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as we continue to give back and reflect on all we have been given. May this season and the new year continue to open our eyes to those in need around us - especially the most vulnerable that need our help. Let us pause and notice that childhood hunger is a reality in our country and in our community but together we can make a difference.
