During the 2019 - 2020 school year Food 2 Kids Big Spring provided a total of 19,487-weekend food sacks to children in need in our community. When schools closed in March due to COVID-19 we were not sure how we were going to be able to sack or distribute our weekend food sacks but we quickly coordinated a successful solution to our challenge. We not only continued to sack and distribute our food sacks - we more than doubled our efforts!
Every week during the 2019 - 2020 school year we had been serving approximately 425 students a weekend food sack and when schools shut down after Spring Break we realized many students were going to be without food - especially since we live in Big Spring and many of our families are employed in the oil field and lost their jobs during this time - it was a one-two punch for our community. Food 2 Kids Big Spring stepped up and provided not just 425-weekend food sacks every week from mid-March through May we provided 960-weekend food sacks each week!
How did we sack and distribute 960-weekend food sacks from mid-March thru May? We had 10 to 12 dedicated volunteers that came every Monday and Tuesday evening with sanitized hands or gloves and with masks on and sacked 480 sacks of food each night. Then Big Spring ISD picked up our food sacks on Thursdays, put them on school buses on Friday morning, and distributed the sacks throughout the city of Big Spring. We were so fortunate to have the help of our local school district. Big Spring ISD should be commended for the incredible work they did Monday - Friday from mid-March until the end of June they opened three campuses and distributed food sacks throughout the city of Big Spring while schools were closed.
